Although it wasn't a special day, we decided to eat out last Tuesday. Maybe we were unconciously trying to heal the travel fever. Nevermind the reason but I was so glad we did. We finally got to try Patrona!! I've tried to get a table before without success but this time we were lucky! We walked into the mexican Restaurant on Annankatu 20 and although many of the tables were already reserved we got one, by the window though.
The staff only speaks English and the service is efficient, professional but very friendly. Something you are not use to in Finland. Music was a bit loud but good. We got the drinks list first and after ordering some Mexican beer the food menu arrived. They had a long list of cocktails but being a school night we just had beer and wine. We were asked if we had been there before (nice touch) and since we hadn't they went through the menu with us and gave suggestions.
We decided on the Short Cut menu that included 4 starters, main course and desert. We thought the menu was good value but if you choose to order from the list they recommend you take at least 2 starters. The longer menu, which name I don't remember meant that you'd spend good 2-3 hrs in the restaurant eating & drinking. Sounds good!
Food was amazing! It had an authentic Mexican taste and feel to it but was a lot better than what we ate in Mexico. I never though Mexican food would suffer from the Chinese food problem; Chinese is good everywhere else except in China where the food is so different both in taste and texture. Starters were quite small but they made us want more which I guess is their purpose :-) Everytime a new dish was served to us they explained what was on our plates and how to eat it. Starters were eaten by hand, and so when the main course came the waiter said: " Now you are actually supposed to use fork & knife" :-)
I don't know what went wrong in the end but the desert was absolutely terrible! Therefore I can't really recommend Patrona to anyone.
Just kidding! The desert was fantastic, I thought I had died and come to desert heaven. It was such a perfect ending to the meal that I don't think I've ever had better. So, if you are visiting Helsinki or living here do eat at Patrona. They really know what they are doing and Patrona is no doubt one of the best restaurants in Helsinki, I'm positive many would agree with me. I actually forgot for a little while that I was in Finland so it's a good place to get a quick fix on your travel fever too. Oh, and if you don't manage to get a table at Patrona, get your fix at their sister restaurant Cholo's just around the corner!
